Visa Requirements for European Tourists Visiting India for a Wildlife Safari

Surya Veloor Sundar8 min read

Quick answer

Most European tourists visiting India for a wildlife safari need an e-Tourist Visa, obtained through the official Indian e-Visa portal before travel. Official guidance says processing takes 72 hours or more, so apply two to four weeks ahead. Wildlife-park permits are separate and should be booked in advance by your tour operator.

01

What Visa Do European Citizens Need to Visit India?

For a normal wildlife holiday, eligible European travellers should select the e-Tourist Visa within India’s e-Visa system. Tourism includes recreation and sightseeing, so a privately guided safari does not require a business, work or journalist visa.

This applies to ordinary passport holders from the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries. A valid Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is different: OCI travellers do not need a tourist visa. If you hold a non-standard passport, have Pakistani origin or plan activities beyond tourism, check directly with the relevant Indian mission before applying.

For india e-visa for uk citizens and other eligible Europeans, the application is completed online. You receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) by email; immigration completes the entry process when you arrive. Travel only when your status says GRANTED.

How to Apply for an Indian e-Visa

  1. 1Open the official application. Start at indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html, select e-Tourist Visa and save your application ID. The government does not authorise emergency or express-visa agents.
  2. 2Enter your details exactly as shown in your passport. Check your name, date of birth, passport number, arrival date and first address in India before moving on.
  3. 3Upload the required documents. Provide a clear scan of the passport’s personal-details page and a recent front-facing photograph on a white background. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after arrival and have at least two blank pages.
  4. 4Pay the fee online. The amount depends on nationality and visa duration, and bank charges may apply. Fees are normally non-refundable, so review the form before submission.
  5. 5Wait for the decision and check your email. You may be asked to re-upload an unclear document or photograph. When approved, save and print the ETA showing GRANTED.
  6. 6Complete the current arrival formalities. Submit the free e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival. At the time of writing, international passengers must also complete the Air Suvidha Self-Declaration Form up to 24 hours before arrival. Neither form replaces the visa.

How Long Does an Indian e-Visa Take to Process?

The official e-Visa FAQ says 72 hours or more. Treat that as a minimum processing window, not a guaranteed approval time. Document queries, mismatched details, nationality-specific checks and busy periods can extend the india e-visa processing time.

We recommend applying two to four weeks before departure, within the permitted application window for your chosen visa. The official minimum is four days before arrival, but using it leaves little room to correct a problem. Avoid non-refundable flight commitments until your ETA is granted where practical.

For urgent travel, contact the Indian mission; paying an agent cannot accelerate a government decision.

05

Do I Need a Separate Permit for Wildlife Parks?

Yes. Your tourist visa and your safari permits are entirely separate. A visa for an Indian wildlife safari lets you enter India for tourism; it does not reserve entry to a national park, a particular zone or a jeep.

Reserve permits are park-specific, often limited and may require each visitor’s passport details. Popular dates and zones can fill early, and booking conditions differ between reserves. Do not leave permits until arrival.

On Tentasy’s private, naturalist-led safaris, we plan the reserve, safari drives and permit requirements as part of the itinerary. You still need the correct visa, but you are not left to coordinate several unfamiliar park-booking systems yourself. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing the wrong category. Select e-Tourist Visa for a recreational safari, not e-Business or another e-Visa subcategory.
  • Using an unofficial lookalike website. Begin on the Indian government portal and be wary of paid “express” promises.
  • Applying too late. The four-day minimum is a deadline, not a sensible planning target.
  • Passport and visa mismatches. Check every letter and number, then travel with the passport used in the application.
  • Ignoring document-quality rules. A cropped passport scan or shadowed photograph can trigger a re-upload request.
  • Confusing validity with permitted stay. A one-year or five-year visa does not allow an unlimited continuous stay.
  • Forgetting arrival forms or park permits. ETA approval does not complete your e-Arrival Card, current health declaration or safari reservations.
  • Keeping the ETA only in your inbox. Carry a printed copy and an offline digital copy, and check that your passport is stamped on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a visa on arrival in India?

Travellers from the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries should not travel to India expecting a tourist visa on arrival. Arrange an e-Tourist Visa or regular tourist visa before departure unless you hold a valid OCI card or qualify under a specific exemption.

What if my Indian e-Visa is rejected?

Do not travel on a rejected application. Read the status and any official explanation, correct document or data problems, and either reapply or seek a regular visa through the relevant Indian mission. Fees are normally non-refundable. Urgent or unusual cases should be discussed directly with the Indian mission, not an unverified express-visa agent.

Do children need their own Indian visa?

Yes. Each child needs a valid passport and their own visa or eligible OCI status. Parents should check that the child’s name, passport number and photograph are accurate on the application and approval.

What should I do if my e-Visa is delayed?

Check the status on the official portal and watch for an email asking you to re-upload a document or photograph. Use the official e-Visa support channels if the delay extends beyond your expected window. Do not pay an intermediary for emergency or express processing; the Indian government says it does not authorise such agents.

Does an Indian tourist visa include wildlife-park entry?

No. A tourist visa permits entry to India for tourism; it does not reserve a jeep or entry slot in a wildlife reserve. Park permits are separate, park-specific and often limited. Tentasy arranges safari permits for private tour guests as part of itinerary planning.
